The EU and Jordan have developed their free trade agreements through supplementary agreements on agriculture, agri-food products and on a bilateral dispute settlement mechanism, which entered into force in 2007 and 2011 respectively. But diplomatic relations between Amman and Jerusalem, signed in 1994 and generally referred to as a cold peace, have deteriorated considerably in recent years, with no common ceremony for the quarter-century of the agreement between the two countries and the recent end of special agreements allowing Israeli peasants easy access to land in Jordan. Cumulation of origin means that a good originating in one partner country may be processed or added to a product of another partner country and that it remains considered an “originating product” of that second partner country for the purposes of a given trade agreement. (2) There are more commonalities between the different schools of Islamic legal sciences than differences between them. Supporters of the eight schools of Islamic legal sciences agree on the fundamental principles of Islam. All agree on the five pillars of Islam: the two testaments of faith (shahadatayn); ritual prayer (salad); Alms (zakat); Fasting in the month of Ramadan (sawm) and Hajj at the holy house of God (in Mecca). All also agree on the foundations of faith: faith in Allah (God), His angels, His Scriptures, His Messengers and, on the day of judgment, in Divine Providence for good and evil. The differences between the `ulama (scholars) of the eight schools of Islamic legal science concern only the secondary branches of the religion (furu`) and not the principles and foundations (usul) [of the religion of Islam]. Disagreement over the secondary branches of religion (furu`) is a mercy. A long time ago, it was said that disagreements between the `Ulama (scholars) are “a good deal”. Trade relations between the EU and Jordan are governed by the Association Agreement, which entered into force in May 2002.
This agreement created a free trade area that opens up reciprocal trade in goods between the EU and Jordan. The agreement signed by Dr. Youssef Al-Shawarbeh, Mayor of Amman, and Nasser Al-Majali, Secretary General of the Jordanian Olympic Committee, will allow both sides to be connected by a computerized system to be launched by the secretariat before the end of the year.
